Wondering when to visit Redang Island?

You are currently viewing Wondering when to visit Redang Island?

Redang Island is best known for its white sandy beach, clear water, and fantastic diving. However, it is a good idea to time your visit to make the most of your vacation. There are many reasons why visiting during certain times can be more advantageous than others. If you’re wondering when to go, this blog post discusses these different timings and how they can impact your experience on this beautiful island.

Redang’s Seasonal Weather

Malaysia has two distinct weather patterns: a warm and humid climate for most of the year and a few wet months during the monsoon season.

The Southwest Monsoon mainly affects the western part of its peninsula from May to September; meanwhile, Northeast Monsoon influences most parts of Malaysia’s east coast from October to March.

The Redang Island is situated off the east coast of Malaysia, so the northeast monsoon brings rain showers and high waves to its shores from October through March.

However, the start of the wet season can vary from year to year, so there’s a chance of a late or early storms occurring.

November to February – Avoid

The Northeast Monsoon is an annual event that starts in November and usually lasts until February. Therefore, water activities can be dangerous during this time due to strong winds and underwater currents. Unfavorable weather conditions also mean many resorts and boat services (water taxis)  don’t operate during the same period.

Though it may still rain occasionally after February, peak monsoons will have subsided by then, so you won’t find as much rainfall.

However, if you extend your stay up to the monsoon season, make sure to book your accommodation early. Note that you will find there is nothing much to do and there will be a limited supply of food. Prices of goods will be expensive.

March – Low Season

In March, the weather is starting to improve, and it can be a great time for travelers in search of something quieter. Though not many people are vacationing at this time because of the unpredictable nature of storms.

It might rain from time to time, and the ocean may still be a bit choppy so be prepared for unpleasant boat ride.

However, during this month, you’ll enjoy discounted rates from resorts and hotels as well as some pretty awesome deals on activities like snorkeling and diving.

April to August – The Peak Season

One of the best times to visit Redang Island is from April through August. The weather and temperature are fantastic during these months, with the average temperature ranging from 25°C-32°C each day and less rain in May onwards. April sees peaks in temperatures of 33 degrees during the day and 24.9 degrees at night for most nights.

This season makes for perfect scuba diving and snorkeling conditions too! You’re more likely able to see marine life such as turtles. Green Turtles are known to nest here from May until August.

Even though it’s a wonderful time of year, the crowds can sometimes get overwhelming due to local school  and public holidays in June and July. June is the busiest month here. In addition, the presence of a large group during snorkeling or diving can scare away turtles or other shy marine animals.

Sept to October – Mid Season

The next best time to visit the beach is September and October because it’s less crowded than other dry months. If you prefer privacy, then visiting Redang during this period is your best chance.

You can enjoy sunny days at the beach as well as windier ones with calm waves crashing on shorelines. You could still enjoy all the activities Redang is known for during this time.

The Northeast Monsoon will start at some point late in October, which means that those visiting might experience the early storm conditions of moderate rain or choppy seas. However, it could be a good opportunity for surfers and adventurous souls.

So, when’s the best time to go to Redang Island?

The best time to visit Redang Island is from late March through October when the weather is perfect, and the scenery is breathtaking. Visits between May and August offer the best chance of seeing marine life.

If you want a quieter experience or enjoy off-peak rates, consider traveling in September or October. Finally, make sure to avoid visiting during the peak monsoon season, November through February.
